Marine Commercial Insurance

Every vessel that operates commercially carries risk that standard insurance was never designed to cover.

Operating a commercial vessel is not the same as owning one. The moment a boat is put to work — carrying passengers, providing charter services, working as a tug, operating as a support vessel, undergoing repair at a yard — the risk profile changes entirely.

Third-party liabilities multiply. Regulatory obligations apply. And the financial consequences of a loss, a collision, or a liability claim can be severe enough to threaten the entire operation.

The same is true for the businesses that service the marine industry. A shipyard that damages a customer's vessel during refit. A marina that is held liable for a fire on its pontoons. A boat dealer whose stock is destroyed in a storm. These are not edge cases — they are the routine exposures of businesses that work with and around the water every day.

Commercial marine insurance is a specialist discipline. The wordings, the markets, and the underwriting are different from standard commercial lines, and the consequences of getting the cover wrong — whether through inadequate limits, missing a critical coverage section, or placing with an insurer who does not understand the sector — are felt acutely when a claim arises.

We have been placing marine risks since the 1800s. Our dedicated marine division arranges tailored programmes for vessel owners, operators, marine trade businesses, and those involved in the construction and sale of vessels — drawing on direct access to Lloyd's of London and the specialist marine markets that the breadth and complexity of these risks require.

When a claim arises.

Marine claims are complex. They frequently involve multiple parties — the vessel owner, the insurer, salvors, other vessels, port authorities, cargo interests — and decisions made in the first hours and days after an incident can significantly affect the outcome.

Our in-house claims team together with London specialist brokers work directly with underwriters and specialist technical advisers to manage marine claims on behalf of our clients. We do not simply pass a claim to an insurer and step back.

We stay involved throughout — helping to manage the immediate response, ensuring the right experts are engaged, and advocating for a fair and prompt resolution.

Whether you operate a commercial vessel, run a marine trade business, or are commissioning a new build, our marine division is here to discuss your requirements and arrange the right cover.

We’re here to help.
